Review: The Hobbit (Spoiler Free)

Hello my lovelies, I hope you're all having a great day!

I'm back with my first review of 2021! How exciting!  I re-read The Hobbit this month - I haven't read it since the first film came out and I really wanted to give the Andy Serkis audiobook version a listen!

Telling the tale of Bilbo's epic journey there and back again, The Hobbit is a wonderful prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, bringing joy to so many people over the years.

Bilbo Baggins is a young hobbit living in Bag End. He is visited by Gandalf the wizard who, unbeknownst to our hobbit friend, has marked his home to make sure that a company of 13 dwarves know this is the place they will find the last of their number - Bilbo himself. Their purpose? To raid the treasure of the Dragon Smaug, who has forced the dwarves from their kingdom, and their birthright. And so begins the wonderful tale that so many of us know and love so well.

For most of us, this was the precursor to a love of fantasy books and the worlds created in them. I first read this when I was about nine or ten, and it was really my first proper foray into fantasy. Until then I'd read the likes of Alice in Wonderland, and a lot of supernatural books (vampires and werewolves and the like), but nothing quite like Tolkien. My favourite part of the book involves Gollum and his riddles, and in fact, it's still my scene within the book, even now.

This time, I listened to the book on audio instead of reading it myself. Audible put out a version by Andy Serkis (of Gollum fame in the films). It was incredible to listen to him doing all the voices, and my favourite scene in the book was made even better by his voice acting.

Even though there were parts of the book that I adored, as I've gotten older I've noticed that I'm not enjoying it as much as I used to. It might be that I've re-read this too many times, or maybe that it feels a bit younger than I remember it, but it's still a book I would re-read again in the future.

Well, that's all from me, I hope you have a great day. Let me know what you're reading, stay safe, and I will see you all very soon.
